Northern Michigan Mourns Loss of Football Student-Athlete Anthony Herbert

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan athletics department was greatly saddened to learn Tuesday of the passing of football student-athlete Anthony Herbert.

"Anthony's passing is felt deeply by many," said Director of Athletics Forrest Karr. "He made a positive impact on our campus and was everything we hope for in a student-athlete. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates, and we are focused on supporting them during this difficult time."

A native of Lapeer, Michigan, Herbert joined the Wildcat football program in 2015. This past season, he was Northern Michigan's starting left guard and played in every game.

"In my brief time with Anthony, I could tell that he was a great young man," said head football coach Kyle Nystrom. "He was well respected by his coaches and teammates and was a leader on the offensive line. We are devastated by this tragedy, and we are keeping his family in our prayers."
The 20-year-old Construction Management major received all-GLIAC academic team honors for his strong performance in the classroom during the 2016 fall semester.

Northern Michigan is providing counseling services to anyone who needs to speak with someone about this tragic loss. Details on services will be forthcoming.
