The second of four candidates interviewing to be the next football coach at NMU was in Marquette on Thursday. Nick Postma is a U.P. native from Rudyard and is currently the defensive coordinator at Grand Valley State. Local 3 asked Postma how he would get the top local talent to come to Northern.

"First of all I want to form a wall around the U.P. and in Wisconsin to get those kids here at Northern Michigan. I think you have to engage in high school coaches. Yu have to get out and work. All the staff members including myself we have to  build relationships with high school coaches," said Postma.

"I really believe with the right fit schematically, defense and offense that you can win up here  with Upper Peninsula kids and with Wisconsin kids," Postman added.

Community support is also a big topic, especially for a team that hasn't had a winning season since 2009. Getting the community more involved would be a major priority for Postma.

"I think it's an opportunity to have a pancake breakfast three months out of the year, we all like our pastys, so let's have a pasty lunch or dinner and engage and interact and talk and communicate with the community and see what they want and what they're interested in," said Postma.

"The other couple things that I think is important is youth camps, the little kids, get them involved in the winter time and the summer time where they're interacting with our players because they're their heroes. Yeah, sure, the NFL guys are their heroes, too, but they're seeing our guys and they're seeing our guys face to face and learning from those guys and our players interact with those kids, and when they go home you know what they do? They say, hey, mom, and dad I want to go to a football game next year. If there's some members of the community that have season tickets there's no reason why our players or myself can't go deliver those tickets and say thank you," Postma added.
