NMU-PACKER WEEKEND ALUM NAMED TO NMU BOARD OF TRUSTEES

In one of his first appoinments, incoming Michigan Governor Rick Snyder named former NMU Quarterback Rick Popp to the school's board of trustees.

He is believed to be the first NMU football alum named to the board . . . and he is definitely the first (and likely last) NMU Packer Weekend alum (Class of 09) named to the board.

Rick will go down in NMU football lore as the man who did not change Buck Nystrom's ill-fated halfback pass call in the 1987 Divsion II Semi-Final game against Portland State. Being the good corporate exec (i.e. order taker) he is, Rick opted to stick with Coach Buck's play call rather than deferring to the wishes of everyone else in the huddle to change the damn play!

Rick is currently director of global benefits at Ford Motor Company. Sounds like an important job, but do car companies even give employees benefits anymore?

Rick is true Yooper, born in L'Anse Vegas and raised in Iron Mountain. Upon being named to the NMU Board he said, "[a]t Ford, I was fornutate enought to be a part of arguably the greatest turnaround in coporate history. I have confidence that with a fresh start, the future of Michigan is looking up as well."

Easy big fellah, you've been named to NMU's Board, not Congress! Just worry about turning around NMU's football program and you'll be in good shape.

Seriously, this appointment is well deserved. Rick will do a great job for NMU and make us all proud to have been his teammate. Kudos.
