Even before Michigan State completed its BCS-altering upset win over Ohio State on Saturday night there was at least one fan who knew what was coming next. A man in the stands at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Big Ten Championship Game could be seen during the FOX broadcast holding up a sign that declared "BURN THE COUCH" during the final moments of No. 10 Michigan State's 34-24 win over No. 2 Ohio State.
After the win sent the Spartans to the Rose Bowl and denied the Buckeyes a spot in the BCS National Championship Game, fans in East Lansing, Mich. celebrated by setting several bonfires fueled by furniture, according to multiple reports.
“It’s more tradition than anything,” Michigan State senior Joe Sheena told the Lansing State Journal. “We’re not a school of pyromaniacs.”
The Police and Fire departments may not find this tradition one worth preserving. Both groups eventually responded to "a large civil disturbance" near student apartments following the game, according to a statement released the city of East Lansing on Sunday.
