SUPER BOWL LI RETROSPECTIVE:

Tom Brady wins fifth title as Patriots mount biggest comeback in Super Bowl history to shock Falcons in OT, 34-28

Patriots shock Falcons to win Super Bowl LI in OT, 34-28

HOUSTON — Tom Brady sat by his locker accepting congratulations as Robert Kraft walked around passing out cigars after the most dramatic championship game comeback of all time.

Another boring logo.

Brady, however, was very upset.

The sweaty No. 12 white jersey he wore to engineer his greatest performance ever — the Pats were down 28-3 with 23: 13 left in Super Bowl LI and won 34-28 on the first possession of the first overtime in Super Bowl history — was somehow missing. He had stuffed it in his bag in his locker, walked away for a few minutes, and when he came back, it was gone.

Hopefully, it will be found. It belongs in Canton.

Program again refers to "NFL Championship" and Vince Lombardi Trophy.  The program and ticket no longer have inconsistent verbiage in referring to the game as they did for many years.

Ticket now refers only to the game as the "Super Bowl" w/ no "World" championship reference.

The first ticket to stop referring to the game as the "NFC vs AFC World Championship Game" was SB 48, Broncos v Panthers

Brady set the record for QBs with his fifth Super Bowl title. He won his fourth Super Bowl MVP. He has been knocked around for the last two years by Roger Goodell and was knocked around for the first half by the Falcons. They were beating him up like the Giants did in Super Bowl XLII. Then he got red-hot in the second half as the Patriots scored the last 31 points and he finished with a Super Bowl record 466 yards passing and beat the previous best Super Bowl comeback by 15 points.
I leaned over as Brady sat in front of his locker and asked him if this Super Bowl was the sweetest of the five considering all of the Deflategate nonsense.

Brady was a bundle of emotions this season. Goodell was finally able to suspend him for the first four games a ridiculous 20 months after the Deflategate non-story was turned into a federal case by Goodell and Ted Wells. That was surely overshadowed by his heart hurting for his mother, who has been ill for the last 18 months. Galynn Brady was able to attend her first game of the season Sunday and briefly got together with her son right after the game before they were going to enjoy a real family moment later in the evening.

This time the Pats are on the positive end of a miraculous catch unlike the SB against the Giants when a miracle catch ended their quest for a perfect season.

He came onto the field before the game and looked up in the stands where his parents and family were sitting behind the Patriots bench. He had said last week it would be special for him to make eye contact with his mother.

“She’s my everything,” he said after the game. “I just love her so much.”

But he couldn’t pick her out.” I was trying,” he said. “All the Patriots fans were waving at me. I couldn’t make anybody out.”

About an hour after the game, I was able to get ahold of Tom Brady Sr. on his cell phone. He and his wife and his daughters and their husbands and all their grandkids were waiting to see the greatest quarterback in NFL history, who now has to be considered the greatest player in NFL history.

“We were so proud,” Brady Sr. said. “We’re thrilled to get the fifth ring. It’s been a long road and it couldn’t have ended any better with the greatest comeback. His mom is as tickled as she can be. Five Super Bowls and four MVPs and more than anything else, it’s a great amount of satisfaction after two long years.”

What was he thinking at 28-3?

“At the beginning of the fourth quarter, I said, ‘I believe,’” Brady Sr. said. “My faith was not as strong then as I would have liked it to have been. But I’ve seen him come back.”
What was the quarterback thinking? “We just got to score,” Brady said.

Goodell was loudly booed when he handed the Lombardi Trophy to Kraft. A few feet away on the podium, Brady was near tears. Kraft visited Brady by his locker before the game. He knew it had been a tough week for him talking about his parents and the emotions he has been feeling about his mother.

“This is the first game his mother had been at,” Kraft said. “She’s been going through a lot. We said, ‘Let’s win this one for her.’ I was thinking when we were down 28-3 how he must have felt. The greater the pressure, the better he performs.”

Brady started the comeback on a 5-yard TD pass to James White with 2:06 left in the third. Stephen Gostkowski missed the extra point and the Patriots were down 28-9.
The Pats added a field goal with 9:44 left to get within two TDs and a pair of two-point conversions. Still not a problem for Atlanta.
But Matt Ryan, who had been playing a perfect game, fumbled as he was hit by Dont’a Hightower, setting up a short field that Brady converted into a 5-yard TD to Danny Amendola with 5:56 remaining. White then took a direct snap for the two-point conversion.
Now the Patriots were down 28-20.
The New England defense was so slow all night and was getting embarrassed by the Falcons’ speed. But it held Atlanta this time and Brady took over at his own 9 with 3:30 left. Julian Edelman made a lunging catch off a tipped ball on the way to another TD by White with 57 seconds left.
“One of the greatest catches I’ve ever seen,” Brady said. “I don’t know how the hell he caught it. I don’t think he does. It was pretty spectacular.”

Now they were down 28-26.
One more two-point conversion. Brady got it with a pass that Amendola barely got over the goal line.
Atlanta had no timeouts left and couldn’t get anything going.
Overtime.
Kraft was sitting in his box thinking the odds were infinitesimal at 28-3.

“You think Tommy has given up?” Kraft said to his son Jonathan.

Together, they said to each other, “No f------ way,” Kraft said.

“We both believed,” he said.

Matthew Slater called heads. It was heads. Brady then drove the Patriots 75 yards with White scoring from the 2.

The confetti started coming down.

Now if Brady can just find his jersey.

One for the Thumb. "Greatest Comeback Ever" inscription.
