MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Halverson Hall in the heart of Northern Michigan University’s campus is slowly being taken down. The old quad is being taken down to make way for the new 1,200 bed “The Woods” residential project.
400 beds in the new dorms will be available in the fall, with an additional 400 being available in January 2018.
Before demolition began, the site had to be cleared of older building materials.
“These buildings were built in the 1960's and there was asbestos we had to deal with and we did that a couple weeks ago,” NMU Spokesperson Derek Hall said. “They're about two weeks into the demolition project here and they're due to be done mid-July.”
Plans are not finalized for the land being cleared away, but additional parking, or green space, is being considered.
According to Hall, alumni have been calling to ask for bricks from the building to remember their old dorms.
