NMU announces Minnesota assistant as Potulny as new head hockey coach

MARQUETTE, MI (WLUC) - Northern Michigan University has a new head hockey coach.
Grant Potulny, the Assistant Coach at the University of Minnesota accepted the position and was officially announced Tuesday morning.
Potulny will be the third head hockey coach in NMU history; replacing Walt Kyle who was the coach for the past 15 years.
Potulny has been the assistant coach for Minnesota for the past eight years. According to his biography on the U of M website Potulny is a native of Grand Forks N.D. He played hockey for U of M from 2000-04 and was a three year captain.
“Potulny works primarily with the Minnesota forwards, but serves as guiding voice during practice and games but is also a relatable presence on the recruiting trail.
Under Potulny's tutelage, the Minnesota offense been one of the nation’s top scoring groups over the last five seasons while the team has won five-straight regular-season conference titles and made two trips to the NCAA Frozen Four in the last five years….
Potulny is Minnesota's only three-year captain since 1947. Potulny played in 146 games for the Gophers, totaling 68 goals and 48 assists for 116 points. He is best-known for scoring the overtime game-winning goal in Minnesota's 4-3 win against Maine in the 2002 national championship game at Xcel Energy Center….
Potulny and his wife, Melissa, have three children.”
