The final medal count is in.

Athletes with Michigan ties ended up with 17 medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics: 10 gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals.

If Michigan was its own country, it'd tie for 16th among 207 participating nations -- though, as we've mentioned before, we're counting all athletes with significant Michigan ties, not specifically those who are natives of Michigan.

For example, though swimming extraordinaire Michael Phelps is a Maryland native, he spent four years in Ann Arbor training with Club Wolverine leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics -- and took classes at the University of Michigan. We count that as a significant tie to Michigan.
In this sense, the Great Lakes State ended up with more gold medals than the host country, Brazil (7), along with South Korea (9), Italy (8), Australia (8) and the Netherlands (8).

We had originally reported that Michigan ended up with 19 medals, but we overlooked one complication: Amanda Elmore (U-M), Emily Regan (MSU) and Katelin Snyder (Detroit resident) won gold as part of the women's coxed eight in rowing. They each were awarded a gold medal, but it counts as just one gold medal in the standings.

The United States ran away in the actual medal count in Rio de Janeiro, leading the world in golds (46), silvers (37) and bronzes (38) for a total of 121 medals.
