MONDAY MOANIN

U.P.  POWER -
SUE NICKEL'S HEMATITES
ARE STATE CHAMPS AGAIN

Ishpeming Coach Jeff Olson & his mentor Coach Buck

The Ishpeming Hematites are the MHSAA Division 7 football champions for the second straight season. Ishpeming defeated Detroit Loyola, 22-12 in the state championship game today at Ford Field.

Ishpeming recovered the opening kickoff and turned it into six points, as quarterback Alex Briones connected with Marcus Antilla for a 17-yard touchdown. Adam Prisk ran the two point conversion into the end zone to make it 8-0 Ishpeming.

The Hematites increased their lead to 14-0 in the second quarter, as Briones was able to find Mitch Laurin for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Ishpeming’s defense forced two interceptions in the second quarter. Tyrus Millimaki and Bobby Zhulkie each came up with an interception in the first half.
The Hematites scored their third touchdown of the game in the third quarter, as Briones was able to run it in from 1-yard out for the touchdown. Ishpeming converted on the two point conversion attempt making it 22-0 Hematites.

Detroit Loyola was able to score two touchdowns in the second half, but the Hematites defense kept the Bulldogs offense in check most of the day. Ishpeming defensive back Ozzy Corp had an interception with 1:31 to go in the fourth quarter to secure the victory for the Hematites.
The Hematites won their fourth state championship in school history.

THE MENOMINEE  MORONS FALL SHORT
Grand Rapids West Catholic outlasts Menominee, 27-14, for the Division 5 football state title
Damn I wish Stew was here to run the single wing!

Grand Rapids West Catholic's habit of ending Menominee's season continued Saturday as the Falcons topped the Maroons, 27-14, in the Division 5 finals.

West Catholic (10-4) defeated Menominee (13-1) in the past four postseasons. West Catholic's title is the second the school history.

The game was even - albeit slowly paced - at the outset, and West Central quarterback Travis Russell's 24-yard connection with David Bancuk was the only score of the first half.
In the second half, West Catholic took over.

The Falcons used the infamous "fake substitution" play out of a field goal formation to score an easy touchdown. Bryce Wintham pretended to sub out on a fourth down, but stayed in the field of play and went untouched 30 yards to the endzone.

Two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter gave West Catholic a three possession lead, and Menominee's run-first offense couldn't keep pace.

The Maroons had several promising drives stall out in enemy territory, and the teams' inability to get points in the redzone undid the title hopes.

The Lakers enjoyed a double bonus Saturday that significantly improved their chances for the program’s fifth national title. They beat the No. 1 team in the region – and No. 3 in the Top 25 – in Colorado State-Pueblo 34-30, and learned they play next week at home against No. 6 West Texas A&M, a 34-27 upset winner over No. 2 Ohio Dominican.

Grand Valley and West Texas A&M will play Saturday at Lubbers Stadium.

The opportunity to play at Lubbers Stadium, where the team is 8-0 this season, is obviously appealing, but so is the chance to play West Texas A&M instead of a return trip to Ohio Dominican. One of two Grand Valley losses this season came at Columbus, 57-14, in the most lopsided Lakers loss in years.

The Lakers face a team that's No. 6 in the regional finals, and at home. The winner will play the winner of No. 6 St. Cloud State at No. 1 Northwest Missouri State. Those two meet 1 p.m. Saturday.

In other regional finals Saturday on the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Shepherd hosts No. 3 West Chester, and No. 1 Lenoir-Rhyne host No. 3 North Alabama.

The finals are played on the home of the higher seed on Dec. 14 with the finals in Florence, Ala., on Dec. 21.

This past Saturday, the Lakers (11-2) were on the field for the final play against Colorado State-Pueblo when most of them learned they would host the quarterfinal game. Coach Matt Mitchell also spoke to them about it in the locker room afterward.

"The guys were pretty excited, in part because we're 8-0 at home," Mitchell said. ""But I think, at the same time, we felt kind of fortunate to get out of there with a win. They have a good program."
The Lakers will be in the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2009 when, in a semifinal game at home, they defeated Carson-Newman 41-27. The Lakers went 13-2 and were national finalists that season under coach Chuck Martin.

Grand Valley is playing in its 16th postseason, and first since 2010. They are 30-11, the third most wins in Division II. The Lakers won titles in 2002, ‘03, ‘05 and ‘06.
