Two weeks after Ron English was fired as Eastern Michigan football coach, the Eagles are whittling down a list of potential replacements that includes one longtime former NFL coach.
Former Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oilers coach Jerry Glanville applied for the EMU job last week and told the Free Press this morning that he can be the coach that turns around the perennially losing program.

Former Atlanta Falcons and Houston Oilers coach Jerry Glanville applied for the EMU job last week and told the Free Press this morning that he can be the coach that turns around the perennially losing program.

“I took the job of the Houston Oilers, and everybody in the National Football League called me up and said, ‘Why would you take that job? That’s the worst job in the football.’” Glanville said. “Four, five years later, I leave and go to the Atlanta Falcons, and everybody calls and says, ‘Why would you take that job? The last game, they played the Detroit Lions, they had 5,000 people in the stadium. Why would you go back to Atlanta?’ And my point is: All the good jobs are taken. You’ve got to get a job and turn it into a good job that, when you leave, everybody wants it.”
Glanville, 72, has a long coaching history and ties to Detroit.

He grew up in the area before moving to Perrysburg, Ohio, in the eighth grade, went to college at Northern Michigan and spent three seasons as an assistant with the Lions.
Glanville last coached collegiately in 2007-09 at Portland State and has spent recent seasons consulting for various programs and coaching the East-West Shrine Game. He also worked briefly for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League, though that franchise folded before he ever coached a game.
Glanville said he has not spoken directly to EMU about the job but has several assistants in mind for his potential staff.

“The fun of Eastern is you’re not going to walk into the living room and take a kid away from Ann Arbor,” Glanville said. “You’ve got to get the kid that, two years after you got him, Ann Arbor wishes they have.”
The Eagles, 2-9 entering Friday’s season finale against Central Michigan, have not had a winning record since going 6-5 in 1995.
Other candidates for the job include former EMU quarterback Ron Adams, ex-Michigan running back Tyrone Wheatley, now an assistant with the Buffalo Bills, former Miami (Ohio) coach Mike Haywood, and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin, previously with Grand Valley State [who has since been hired by Miami-Ohio]
.
“I know the history. I know it’s been hard, it’s been tough,” Glanville said. “Will there be challenges? Anytime you take a head job, whether you’re with the Lions or Eastern Michigan, your job is to keep the bus going down the road, and there’s going to be flat tires. Things are going to go wrong. Well, you keep the bus going down the road, and that’s really what these jobs are all about. It doesn’t matter what level you’re at.”
