CATS LOSE MINERS CUP FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR !



NMU Falls 31-7 in Miner’s Cup at Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University football team fell 31-7 at Michigan Tech on Saturday (Oct. 12) in the annual Miner's Cup game from Sherman Field. The Wildcats fall to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
MTU (3-2, 3-2 GLIAC) scored the game's first 24 points and held the Wildcats to 155 yards of total offense.

Redshirt freshman running back Keon Collier scored NMU's touchdown on a 16-yard run with 5:34 left on the third quarter clock. The 'Cats scored after an 8-play, 80-yard drive that took up 3:17. Two big pass plays from junior quarterback Dustin Thomas setup the score. Thomas found sophomore Austin Young for 14 yards on a third down and then hit junior Marcus Tucker for a 36-yard gain to the Tech 16-yardline.

The Huskies scored a touchdown in the first quarter on a 1-yard run from Cole Welch.
In the second quarter, Garrett Mead made a 23-yard field goal and Charlie Leffingwell added a 2-yard touchdown run with 28 seconds left before halftime.
Welch added another 1-yard run for the 24-0 lead with 8:57 left in the third.

The final score was a 13-yard pass from Tyler Scarlett to Ian Wienke seven seconds into the fourth quarter.

NMU had 155 yards of total offense on 107 passing and 48 rushing. Thomas was 7-for-12 for 70 yards passing. He led the ground attack with 31 yards on eight attempts. Freshman quarterback Shaye Brown saw his first game action and was 5-for-12 for 37 yards. Collier finished with 13 yards on the ground while Tucker had 56 yards receiving on three grabs.

Sophomore Thomas McNamara and junior Nick Krause led the defense with eight total tackles. Juniors Marcus Lee and Jordan Adediran had seven tackles. Adediran and senior Morgan Stenz combined for a sack.

MTU racked up 403 yards offense on 254 passing and 149 rushing. Scarlett was 18-for-31 for 254 yards passing and a touchdown. Leffingwell had 73 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Brandon Cowie had 113 yards receiving on six grabs. Jordan McConnell also had six catches for 76 yards. Brett Gervais led the Tech defense with eight tackles.

Northern continues play on the road in the GLIAC North Division at Grand Valley State on Oct. 19. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
