Super Bowl XXIV RETROSPECTIVE

1990, Joe Montana wins third Super Bowl MVP in 49ers 55-10 win over Broncos

Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and a Super Bowl record five touchdowns with zero interceptions. The Broncos barely touched Montana all game.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, Thursday, January 9, 2014, 8:08 PM

Joe Montana made it look so easy, the thought of Super Bowl XXIV being his last trip to the big game never crossed anyone’s mind. Montana won his record third Super Bowl MVP award in the San Francisco 49ers’ 55-10 blowout of the Denver Broncos, the most lopsided final score in the history of the Super Bowl. And, as the saying goes, it was not as close as that ridiculous score indicated.

PROGRAM: Artistic rendering of a New Orleans culture and the Lombardi Trophy.

Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and a Super Bowl record five touchdowns with zero interceptions. The Broncos barely touched Montana all game. Denver was credited with one sack, but it was when Montana ran out of bounds at the line of scrimmage.

TICKET:  5pm Eastern Kick-Off.
Again, the program and ticket title the game differently.

The Niners tied the Pittsburgh Steelers with four Super Bowl victories and became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls with different head coaches as George Seifert took over for Bill Walsh, who retired after the Niners’ victory in Super Bowl XXIII. The Broncos lost in the Super Bowl for the third time in four seasons and fourth overall, which tied them with the Minnesota Vikings for the most Super Bowl losses.

Montana became the third player to be named the Associated Press NFL MVP and win Super Bowl MVP in the same season, joining Bart Starr (1966) and Terry Bradshaw (1978).
The Niners scored touchdowns on six of their first eight possessions. The only thing that went wrong for the Niners was when Mike Cofer missed an extra point in the first quarter that kept Denver within 13-3. Montana actually threw incomplete on his first two passes. He set a Super Bowl record with 13 straight completions over the second and third quarters.

Jerry Rice caught seven passes for 148 yards and a Super Bowl-record three receiving touchdowns. The Niner defense, already a powerful unit that had added two-time Super Bowl-winning linebacker Matt Millen before the season, held John Elway to 10-for-26 passing and 108 yards with two interceptions.

Montana’s Super-staggering career Super Bowl numbers: 83 of 122 (68%) for 1,142 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions.

But the quest for a three-peat, along with Montana’s Niners career, were crushed by Leonard Marshall and the Giants the next year in the NFC Championship Game. Montana got close to the Super Bowl one last time in the 1993 season with the Chiefs, but a concussion KO’d Montana from the conference title game as the Bills completed their AFC four-peat.

As for Elway, he fought through the stigma of three Super stinkers for another eight mostly brilliant seasons until finally breaking through at the expense of the man who drew up the Niner rampage in Super Bowl XXIV, then-new San Fran offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren.

THE RING:  Numero Quatro for the Niners. Tied them with the Steelers for the most all-time.

Joe Montana leads 49ers to incredible comeback win over Boomer Esiason's Bengals

After completing 92-yard drive, culminating with a 10-yard pass from Joe Montana (r.) to John Taylor (far r.) Roger Craig (33) and the 49ers come from behind to beat Bengals, 20-16, in Super Bowl XXIII.

Jerry Rice is the MVP but it is John Taylor who catches touchdown from Montana with 34 seconds left to cap 92-yard drive -- after pointing out John Candy in the stands.

WHERE WAS I?
The Shaft!! Sophomore year at NMU. Watched the game at Steve Avery's epic Super Bowl Party at JT's.  This was after a raucous weekend getaway in Iron River.  My last recollection of the party was Bubba passed watching the game with one eye open and one eye closed and Slick the VB player having her arm around him.

Joe Montana didn’t take a plane, train or automobile but chose to drive instead.
The ultimate football Super hero drove the San Francisco 49ers 92 yards in the waning moments of Super Bowl XXIII to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-16, for their third title of the decade.
PROGRAM:
An artistic rendering of theLombardi Trophy rising
out of the Atlantic, fitting for the Super Bowl's return to Miami. Again, the program titles it a game for the NFL Championship and the Lombardi Trophy.  This was the 6th SB in Miami and the first not in the Orange Bowl.

And it all started with an assist from John Candy. Trailing by three points and standing at his own 8-yard line, Montana broke the ice in a tense huddle by pointing out the Canadian comic actor in the stands. From there, Montana cemented his Super Bowl legend, completing 8-of-9 passes on the 11-play drive that ended with a 10-yard TD strike to John Taylor with 34 seconds left.
TICKET:
Has more subdued tones and orange border around the words "Super Bowl" to match the ticket borders. Average ticket price is $100.  Game is titled the "World Championship."  Kick-Off was 5pm EST, the last outdoor SB to start before 6pm

Montana led the winning drive, and Taylor caught the winning pass, but Jerry Rice was named MVP. Rice caught 11 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown. He caught three passes for 51 yards on the last drive, including a 27-yarder on second-and-20 from the Bengal 45. On the winning play, Rice went in motion to the left side and turned upfield right next to Taylor. That drew double coverage to Rice, leaving Taylor room to cut to the post and get open for the winning score.

Rice arrived as a first-round draft pick in 1985, three months after the Niners routed the Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX. After getting roughed up a couple years in a row by the Giants and then getting upset by the Vikings in the playoffs, the Niners were back to stake their claim as the team of the 1980s.

IMMORTAL SB XXIII QUOTE
"Hey, isn't that John Candy?"
QB Joe Montana to OT Harris Barton on the final drive.

In the ’88 playoffs, Rice had five touchdowns and 194 receiving yards as the Niners hammered the Vikings and Bears by a combined 62-12 to set up a rematch of Super Bowl XVI, the third rematch in Super Bowl history. The Bengals were led by NFL MVP Boomer Esiason, who threw 28 TD passes and just 14 interceptions, and coach Sam Wyche, who had been a Niners assistant in Super Bowl XVI.
Couldn't find any pics of John Candy at the game. Christie Brinkley will have to do. Husband Billy Joel sang the Anthem.

The game started with a bad break for the Bengals, literally. Pro Bowl defensive tackle linebacker Tim Krumrie shattered his left tibia and fibula and had to be carted off the field, his mangled leg in an air cast.
EDITOR'S NOTE: This was from the infamous leg whip of the Niners' O-Line. Howie Long once went after their O-Line Coach after a game.
The expected fireworks never arrived. Both defenses dug in, resulting in the first halftime tie in Super Bowl history at 3-3. Esiason turned in a heroic effort in defeat as a shoulder injury limited him to attempting just 25 passes. He completed 11 for 144 yards with one interception.

Montana completed 23 of 36 passes for 357 yards and two touchdown passes. Roger Craig caught eight passes for 101 yards, the first running back to have 100 receiving yards in a Super Bowl. Taylor’s TD grab was his only catch of the game, but he did return three punts for 56 yards and a Super Bowl-record 18.7 average. Bill Walsh stepped down as head coach after the Super Bowl, leaving behind a long legacy of assistant coaches who would make sure the short passes of his West Coast offense would go deep into the heart of pro football for years to come.

And although it would be another year before the Niners would cap off the 1980s by thrashing the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, unconfirmed postgame reports had Candy ordering up three orange whips, one each for Montana, Rice and Taylor.
The Niners' third ring.

Redskins' Doug Williams leads rout of Broncos in historic victory

The biggest pain during Super Bowl week for Doug Williams was not the slew of questions about being the first African-American quarterback in the big game. The veteran signal-caller was ready for that.

The honor went to the emergency root canal Williams had to have the day before his historic triumph. But much like the week-long grilling and the Denver Broncos defense, the dental work proved to be a mere inconvenience as Williams did the drilling on Super Sunday. Williams dominated on his historic day, throwing for a Super Bowl-record 340 yards and four touchdowns, all in the second quarter, as the Redskins buried Denver, 42-10, in Super Bowl XXII.

Program features an artistic rendering of the Lombardi Trophy along with the mission architecture of San Diego where the game was played.

After what Williams had to go through to get to the Super Bowl, a little dental work wasn’t going to stop him.

After five mostly successful years in Tampa Bay , Williams sat out 1983 in a contract dispute and to recover emotionally from the death of his wife due to a brain tumor. He then played two years in the USFL before Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, who had been Williams’ offensive coordinator for a season in Tampa, talked him into returning to the NFL to back up Jay Schroeder.

Williams with the Arizona/Oklahoma Outlaws of the USFL

In 1987, Williams won four games in relief of Schroeder and started two games when Schroeder was injured. Gibbs decided to change QBs for the playoffs. Williams was solid but unspectacular, and wasn’t so hot in the first quarter of the Super Bowl, going 3-for-9 as the Skins fell into a 10-0 hole against John Elway. The quarter ended with injury to insult as Williams twisted his knee on a sack and had to leave the game. Schroeder came on and got sacked and threw an incompletion.

Williams returned for the start of the second quarter, and turned around the Super Bowl on one play — an 80-yard bomb to Ricky Sanders. Williams audibled out of a short pass when he saw cornerback Mark Haynes playing tight on Sanders, who then blew past the ex-Giant, caught Williams’ pass around midfield and ran untouched the rest of the way. After the Broncos went three and out, Williams hit Gary Clark, who made a diving catch for a 27-yard TD on third-and-1 to cap a five-play, 64-yard drive.

The Broncos missed a field goal and the Skins were back in the end zone two plays later on Timmy Smith’s 58-yard TD run. Another Bronco three-and-out was followed by a Skins three-and-in as Williams hit Sanders for a 50-yard TD to cap a three-play drive. The Skins took their time getting back into the end zone following an Elway interception, needing seven plays for an eight-yard Williams pass to tight end Clint Didier. The clock showed 1:11 before halftime, but Super Bowl XXII was over.

Williams went on to be the head coach at Grambling, yeah, yeah, Grambling (his alma mater), and is currently with the Redskins organization.

Williams led the Skins to five touchdowns on five straight possessions and had the ball for less than six minutes. For the quarter, Williams went 9-for-11 for 228 yards and four touchdowns, Smith had 122 yards on five carries and Clark caught four passes for 168 yards.

Media Pass

Smith rushed for a Super Bowl-record 204 yards. The rookie fifth-round pick had rushed for just 126 during the season playing behind George Rogers but was the team’s leading rusher with 138 yards in the two playoff games.

Elway running for his life in his second straight blow-out loss in the Super Bowl.  Third loss overall for the Broncs.

Gibbs decided Smith would make his first NFL start in the Super Bowl, and didn’t tell him until the morning of the game. Gibbs had filled in Williams, the fill-in QB with the filled-in tooth who was about to fill up the record books.

SUPER BOWL RETROSPECTIVE :

Super Bowl XXI - NY Giants beat John Elway's Broncos behind red-hot Phil Simms

Big Blue quarterback turns in greatest passing performance in Super Bowl history, going 22 for 25 with 268 yards and three touchdowns in a rout of Denver.

A JAN. 25, 1987 FILE PHOTOERIC RISBERG/APBill Parcells is triumphantly carried off field after Super Bowl win as Giants are crowned World Champs.

The lingering question after Super Bowl XXI was not how did Phil Simms complete 22 of 25 passes but how in the heck did he end up with three incompletions. Simms turned in the greatest Super Bowl quarterback performance of all time with a record 88% completion percentage, 268 yards and three touchdowns as the Giants crushed the Broncos, 39-20, to win their first title in 30 years, turning the Rose Bowl into Big Blue heaven for their long-suffering fans.

In 1987 I was a senior in high school. Watched the game at my then girlfriends house.

The pregame buildup focused on how Broncos star quarterback John Elway would stack up against the Big Blue Wrecking Crew, the best defense in the NFL. For one quarter, it looked like Super Bowl XXI would be a shootout between Simms and Elway. The QBs combined to go 12-for-12 in the quarter as the Broncos took a 10-7 lead on a Giant defense that had not allowed a touchdown in the playoffs. Elway, who got Denver to Pasadena thanks to The Drive against the Browns in the AFC title game, continued to have the hot hand in the second, driving the Broncos to the Giants’ 1-yard line. That’s where the vaunted Giants ‘D’ made its stand. Lawrence Taylor, the NFL’s MVP who had been quiet to that point, stuffed Elway on first down. Harry Carson then stopped Gerald Willhite for no gain before Carl Banks dropped Sammy Winder for a four-yard loss on a pitchout. Rich Karlis then missed the easy field goal. The next time the Broncos had the ball, George Martin sacked Elway in the end zone for a safety after an apparent 25-yard Elway completion on the previous play was ruled incomplete. The Broncos followed that up with another missed field goal, going into halftime with a 10-9 lead but feeling anything but Super.

BEST QUOTE:  MVP Phil Simms, pictured above, was the first Super Bowl participant to utter those now famous words.

The Giants’ season had plenty of pivotal and memorable plays such as Simms’ fourth-and-17 pass to Bobby Johnson and Mark Bavaro dragging half of the 49ers’ team down the field on Monday Night Football. The Giants added another one four plays into the second half. On fourth-and-1 from the
MEDIA PASS
Giant 46, backup quarterback Jeff Rutledge snuck into the punt formation unnoticed. After surveying the field, Rutledge moved under center, called his own number and barreled ahead for two yards. Simms then completed four straight passes, including a 13-yard TD strike to Bavaro, and the Giants had the lead for good.

MCCONKEY!

The Giant highlights kept rolling Joe Morris carrying the load on the next TD drive; Phil McConkey’s 44-yard grab to set up another TD, and his scoring grab that bounced off Bavaro’s hands.

PROGRAM: Another photo-realistic depiction of the Lombardi Trophy with the reflection of the Rose Bowl.

The Giants had beaten the Broncos, 19-16, in November at the Meadowlands. But thanks to the confident Simms, they made this rout look easy. With Denver geared up to stop Morris, Simms had a field day with the play-action pass. He threw on nine of the Giants’ first 11 first-down plays and completed all nine. He was barely touched all game behind The Suburbanites, the blue-collar line led by center Bart Oates and future crude car salesman Brad Benson. Banks made 10 solo tackles, including four for losses, to lead the defense.

TICKET:  Slightly different background color from the program.  Kick-Off is 3:00PM PST; 6PM EST.

The only suspense that remained was how Carson would be able to start the then-new tradition of the Gatorade shower on Bill Parcells. The All-Pro linebacker donned a yellow security jacket, and made his move to soak Parcells for the 17th time that season. Simms earned a Gatorade dump, too, perhaps the only way to cool him off that day.
