MARQUETTE -- Courtesy Northern Michigan University Athletics  Northern Michigan University football coach Chris Ostrowsky has hired two assistants and restructured two others on his coaching staff. The new hires are Karl Maslowski, who will coach the linebackers and special teams, and Dane Rowe, who will be the assistant coach on offense. Joe Ballard has been promoted to defensive coordinator after six seasons as an assistant coach on defense. Joe Coniglio takes over run game responsibilities. "I wanted to create great continuity amongst the staff, and I think we've done that," said Ostrowsky. "Joe Ballard will make a seamless transition to defensive   coordinator for our players. He brings tremendous amounts of loyalty, toughness and knowledge to the position. Joe Coniglio will be a great source of energy, based on an unrelenting work ethic, to build upon what we created in year one." Maslowski coached three seasons at Western Kentucky University in the same position he takes on at NMU. He played linebacker for the Hilltoppers from 2000-03. He was a third-team All-American by the Sports Network and Football Gazette and first-team All-Gateway Conference selection. The 2002 WKU team won the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship and Maslowski had an interception in the game, leading to the first touchdown. "Karl brings another proven winner to the program, being a member of a national championship team as a player," Ostrowsky said. "We are excited to see Karl contribute to our defense and special teams, and feel fortunate to add someone with his experience and championship pedigree. We welcome Karl and his family." Before his return to WKU, Maslowski coached two seasons (2008-09) at Miami University (Ohio) as a graduate assistant on defense. He also coached outside linebackers at the College of Holy Cross (Mass.) from 2006-08, semi-pro football in Australia in 2005 and was a student assistant at WKU in 2004. Rowe was a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Wyoming during the 2012 season. He also coached at Merrimack College (Mass.) in the spring of 2012 and spent two seasons (2010-12) at Yale University (Ct.). As a student at the University of New Hampshire (2006-10), Rowe served as a student assistant. "We are excited with Dan's experience in academics from Yale, his Division I experience from Wyoming and his championship experience from New Hampshire," Ostrowsky said. "Dan will be a tremendous addition to our staff and we're excited to have him." Preseason practice begins Aug. 17. The season opener against the University of Findlay takes place at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Superior Dome.

·         Coach Grenke’s barbecue beginning at 6 pm on Friday evening (this Friday). Coach will provide food. We’ll get a keg. Bring your own “brown liquor” or other bevy of choice.  Coach Grenke’s Address for the Friday night barbecue beginning at 6:00 pm is:  153 Lakewood Ln. in Harvey.

·         Team meeting at the dome beginning at 6:00 p.m. (including food), then film session by Jeff Harry.

 

·         Then to Marquette establishments for those able.

 

·         Sunday morning coffee clutch to review accomplishments

Police: Anna Benson Stormed Kris's House With Gun And Bulletproof Vest

Yesterday we learned that Anna Benson—the Baseball Wife who once vowed to sleep with the entire Mets roster if Kris, her pitcher husband, cheated on her—stormed Kris's house in Smyrna, Ga. on Sunday night with a gun, metal baton, and a bulletproof vest, demanding money. He called the cops. Today, the report produced by the cops gives us a fuller picture of what happened.

 

Anna showed up at Kris's house and walked through the unlocked garage door. She was carrying an extendable metal baton and a purse with a Taurus Judge five-shot revolver in it, and wearing an ammo belt—complete with knife—and a bulletproof vest. (Why was she wearing a bulletproof vest? She told the cops that it was "a new model she was testing for a company." 

She needed to wear it all the time so that it could mold to her body. Had nothing to do with her plans for Kris, you see.)

 

Anna found her way to his bedroom, started swinging around the extendable baton—she hit his computer monitor—and told him she needed $30,000, and would hit him. She took the gun out, too. She called him a "pussy" a lot. Kris told her he would get the money, but he needed to go get his wallet. He could get her a lighter, too, while he was out. She needed a cigarette. He then went to the basement, called 911, left the house, and hid in the woods until police arrived.

 

When they showed up, pointed their guns at her, and placed her under arrest, Anna said she didn't think that she had done anything wrong. She didn't know why it was a big deal. She also said that police ought to look inside Kris's house—there they would find the real crime, "illegal drugs." Lo and behold, the police inventory list includes (in addition to a Taser, a hatchet, and an ammo vest) "1 bag of syringes" and "8 unknown pills." Ladies and gentlemen, we might just have the lamest PED scandal of all time.

 

The complete inventory now in Smyrna cops' possession:
• 1 Taurus Judge Handgun
• 13 rounds of ammo
• 1 hatchet
• 1 bag of syringes
• 1 hard drive
• 1 ammo vest
• 1 ammo belt (with ammo)
• 1 bullet proof vest

Michigan’s Jeff Daniels was on “The Late Show with David Letterman” Wednesday night. The Michigan actor talked Upper Peninsula, Mackinac, “Dumb and Dumber” and baseball.

When asked by Letterman to list some things to do in Michigan, the Chelsea native was speechless.
“Actually, what you can do up there, and they do it very well, you can drink,” Daniels said when asked about the Upper Peninsula. “It’s woods. It’s fishing. It’s hunting and it’s drinking. ... They are proud of it, too!”

Daniels praised Letterman for his pronunciation of peninsula, but offered the TV host advice in pronouncing Mackinac.

“They built the Mackinac Bridge, and that’s only because the Upper Peninsula allowed it,” Daniels said.

Reaction on Twitter was mixed, but most tweets were quick to say Daniels missed an opportunity to talk up the state.

“You know what I’m always curious about? The Upper Peninsula.” – David Letterman

After some banter about hunting, fishing, and drinking Letterman goes on to ask Jeff Daniels why the Upper Peninsula is not part of Wisconsin. We were surprised that Mr. Daniels wasn’t able to answer the question. Well, we have an answer for that!

They followed with some chat about Mackinac Island (yes, it’s pronounced MackiNAW, not MackiNACK, and not to be confused with Mackinaw City) and the “longest porch in the history of porches”. That would be the Grand Hotel. 

A frequent question we get is, “Is Mackinac Island considered the Upper Peninsula?” And yes, it is. They have a 906 area code across the island and it’s actually at a higher latitude than the Mackinac Bridge.
